Snapchat Parent to Reportedly Lay Off About 100 Engineers Snap the parent company of popular photo-sharing platform Snapchat is reportedly planning to lay off nearly 100 engineers within a week a media report said. Tech website Cheddar late on Wednesday reported that the layoffs would affect less than 10 percent of Snaps engineering department. Citing sources Cheddar also said that the planned layoffs would be Snaps biggest to date. This third round of layoffs comes after Snap cut the jobs of a couple dozen employees across its hardware and recruiting divisions 2017. This was followed by two dozen more cuts in January. Snap slowed its hiring rate by nearly 60 percent last quarter and reported having 3069 employees at the end of 2017. During the same time Snap instituted a company-wide system for evaluating employee performance and company CEO Evan Spiegel then told managers that they would be required to make hard decisions about evaluating their teams going into the 2018 calendar year. The report also noted that Snap withheld cash bonuses for employees at the end of 2017 because of failure to meet company-wide goals. Spiegel received a $637 million (roughly Rs. 4100 crores) stock award the same year for taking the company public. Not only that adding more daily average users Snapchat grew faster than Facebook in the fourth quarter of 2017 in the US. Snapwas quoted as saying that its daily average users in the region during the fourth quarter of 2017 rose five percent from the prior quarter to 80 million. The credit of Snapchats growth went to Spiegels design overhaul of the app that was unveiled in November 2017 that helped the company reclaim some of its popularity that waned after Facebooks launch of Instagram Stories. Ryanair Pilots in Dublin Threaten a Holiday Strike A plane is directed on the tarmac at Dublin Airport. Ryanair faces a deteriorating relationship with its pilots in its major markets due to a spreading contract dispute. Chris Ratcliffe / Bloomberg Skift Take: The Irish airline has the highest operating margins in Europe and can afford to make concessions. Its divide-and-conquer approach to negotiating different contracts at various airport bases risks the ire of employees tempted to unionize. Sean O'Neill Ryanair Holdings Plc pilots in the airlines home base of Dublin defied a management threat and voted in favor of labor action throwing their weight behind a European organizing campaign seeking better working conditions. Of the cockpit staff who voted 95 percent said theyd rather strike than accept management proposals to improve employment terms people familiar with the matter said Monday. The people didnt say how many participated. Most Dublin pilots who fly for Ryanair come from agencies and arent allowed to vote as full time employees are. Ryanair said less than 28 percent of its 300 Dublin pilots voted in favor of labor action. Ryanair has received no notification of any industrial action by its Dublin pilots so we suspect this is more PR activity by IALPA the company said referring to the union that is leading the drive in Ireland and already represents IAG SA-owned Aer Lingus. Ryanair last week told Dublin flight-deck crews it may scrap promotions halt transfer requests cut back recently-granted spending allowances and move aircraft to other Irish airports if staff go on strike. The shares fell 3.9 percent on Monday after Bloomberg reported the results of the Dublin vote the biggest daily decline since October 2016. Pilot support in Dublin the discount carriers second-biggest base after London Stanstead advances an organizing drive that has already led Italian pilots to declare they plan to call a strike on Dec. 15 for four hours. Employees have also formed local labor councils in Spain Sweden Portugal the Netherlands and Germany where pilot union Vereinigung Cockpit is planning a press conference about talks at Ryanair. The organizing push comes as Ryanair battles deteriorating relations with its staff. A crew shortage in September partly stemmed from rivals including Norwegian Air poaching its pilots. That forced Ryanair to cancel flights for 700000 customers. The company has since offered concessions but has said it will reverse course if pilots in Dublin strike. Chief Executive Officer Michael OLeary has repeatedly fought attempts for Ryanair to become unionized most recently in 2012. The company is bringing back Peter Bellew as chief operations officerwho left for Malaysia Airlines Bhd two years ago to patch up labor relations. Three Irish bases accepted pay increases of as much as 22000 euros ($25923) the airline has said. Ryanair has a market value of 20 billion euros ($23.6 billion). 2017 Bloomberg L.P.
